REgular Work Permits

You do not need a work permit to look for a job. However, in order to comply with California labor laws regarding minors, once hired you must have a valid work permit before your first day of work. The Work Experience Office can deny issuing and/or revoke a work permit for the student that does not maintain an adequate GPA, attendance and/or has truancy issues.
(Cal. Educ. Code §49164)

In order to be eligible for a work permit, the student must:

  • Have and maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA* based on the most recent quarter/semester report card.
  • Have and maintain a 90% attendance rate.
  • Have and maintain less than 6 periods of truancy. Parents/Guardians have 5 days to clear an absence with the Attendance Office. Uncleared absences are automatically converted to a truancy.

*total non-weighted GPA is used to determine eligibility.

If you are eligible, you are ready to request a work permit application.

Once a work permit is issued, student records will be reviewed periodically to ensure students are adhering to the above requirements.

Completing the Forms

  1. Parent/Guardian and student sign and date the District policy regarding work permits.
  2. Student completes the top section "Minor's Information" of CDE Form B1-1 (application for a work permit) and must also sign and date the form.
  3. Parent/Guardian signs and dates the middle section of CDE Form B1-1.
  4. The employer completes the bottom section of CDE Form B1-1 and must also sign and date the form.

Please allow 1-2 business days for work permit processing.

A work permit may only be released to the student to whom it was issued.

Work permits are valid for one school year (unless revoked) and expire 5 days after the start of the new school year.

Since each work permit is specific to an employer, the student must apply for a new work permit if they change jobs or intend to have more than one.
