Pioneer Music Program

Our Music Programs

Simi Valley High School offers a variety of music courses. Students taking these courses must attend all rehearsals and performances, and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and "S" or above in effort and citizenship to participate. The courses all meet UC/CSU requirements.


Choral Music

Concert Choir is a beginning/intermediate level vocal ensemble in which students focus on the fundamentals of vocal technique, sight singing, music theory and the learning and performance of a diverse repertoire of music. Entry-level, no audition required.

Vocal Ensemble is an advanced women’s choir in which students focus on further development of vocal technique, sight singing, music theory, music history, and the learning and performance of a challenging and diverse repertoire of music. Audition required.

Vocal Jazz Choir  is an advanced ensemble that focuses on challenging repertoire within Jazz, Pop, and Contemporary A Cappella genres. Students will further develop vocal technique, sight singing, microphone technique and improvisation skills. Students in Jazz Choir will be expected to rehearse outside of class, participate in weekly sectionals, sing the national anthem at select athletic events, and participate in additional performances and festivals. Two-part audition required. 

Mixed Choir is a student-lead non-auditioned club which meets 2x/week at lunch in room M-8 and performs 2-3x per year. Enrollment in the choir program and prior experience are NOT required.

Instrumental Music

Jazz Ensemble: Made up of selected students from the Instrumental Music Program, members of the Jazz Ensemble perform at school functions,including concerts, assemblies and pep rallies, as well as community functions and at solo and ensemble festivals throughout the Southern California area. After school rehearsals and attendance at all school performances are required. Students who represent the school in extra curricular activities, competitions, or performances must be academically eligible.

Concert Band: The primary purpose of this course is to develop a firm understanding by each student of his/her particular instrument. Concert Band also provides an opportunity for students with a background of music training to further enhance their musical ability and understanding. Enrollment is open to those students with an intermediate/advanced level of skill and ability with teacher consent.

Concert Orchestra: The primary purpose of this course is to develop a firm understanding by each student of his/her particular instrument. The Concert Orchestra also provides opportunity for students with a background of music training to further enhance their musical ability and understanding. Enrollment is open to those students with an intermediate/advanced level of skill and ability with teacher consent.

Guitar: [Ms. Wismar, Instructor] - A beginning through advanced course in guitar. Students will develop skills in reading, writing, and performing guitar music which opens an avenue of personal expression that provides the performer deeper understanding of the self and a way to evoke images, feelings, and emotions that communicate not only sound but sense (meaning) to others.

Wind Ensemble: The Wind Ensemble is made up of selected students from the Instrumental Music Program. An advanced understanding of musical concepts is required. This organization performs at school functions, including concerts and community functions, band and orchestra festivals.

Marching Band: This course will emphasize the techniques, attitudes and skills needed for Marching Band and Color Guard. This group performs at all football games, marches in a number of parades and is responsible for presenting quality music at community functions. Rehearsals may be before or after school or at night. Musicians must be enrolled in another band class during the day (not applicable to Color Guard).  Fulfills PE credit.
